The urgent message was suddenly received from the Chartering Department advising about possibility of vessel’s call to Alaska involving a Polar Code Certificate obtaining. Certainly, we heard about the Polar Code requirements, however deemed that it would never affect vessels under our management. Some kind of scepticism crept into our thoughts about real materialization of such voyage, however in the hard time for shipping, we had to support Shipowners’ commercial intentions, simultaneously ensuring safe operation of vessels through rigorous attention to every detail.

The Safety and Technical Departments commenced a comprehensive study of specific requirements for further vessel’s preparation for the intended voyage.

Based on the particular Polar Water Operational Manual and Operational Assessment Report the Recognized Organization issued the Polar Code Certificate for a single voyage.

The Qualified Individual Authority provided professional clarifications in respect to the Western Alaska COTP coverage which was subsequently enrolled with approved organization.

The Purchasing Department managed to supply the required communication equipment with aircraft in spite of the local agent’s caution that nothing could be delivered due to remote port location.

After intensive vessel’s preparation and crew training the vessel successfully passed the USCG inspection without deficiencies.
